Gary was a great person and I have so many fond memories of our outings. How very sad to pass at such a young age.

Charles Daniels (1971)

The first classmate I met when I arrived on campus as a Freshman was my Grove Terrace roommate – Gary Eure. Gary and I were from two vastly different worlds. Gary was from Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York.  I, from Muskogee, Oklahoma.  He liked to be called Mohammed Eure and calling me Oak, short for Okie.  I knew he and I would get along well when he also started calling me “Homes”, a brotherly term he only used with his Hometown Guys.  We fondly referred to ourselves as the “Homii”, plural for Homes. One of my favorite memories was the night after DOA while I was carefully packing for our trip the next day to Yosemite and Squaw Valley for FOT '71. Gary entered our bedroom, and in less than a couple of minutes - opened his closet door, grabbed all his clothes (both clean and dirty), shoved them into his suitcase and proclaimed “I’m done, I’ll see you later”. Out the door he went, not to be seen again, until we boarded the busses the next morning. One couldn’t help but enjoy being around Gary. He was the life of the party and never was short for words, more often than not, rhyming his words and sentences, just as Muhammad Ali did back then.

Here’s my favorite pic of Gary.
