I believe Les was just 17 and fresh out of high school when we arrived on campus in August of '69.  I was five years older, having recently completed serving in the Air Force.  He had an amiable personality and we hit it right off.  I had considerable experience with barbershop singing and with is beautiful bass voice, he was the perfect choice for the quartet we put together with Ken Johnston as baritone, Gary Kapity as lead and me as tenor, see picture.  L to R, me, Gary in barbershop chair recovering from skiing fun, ken and Les on the right.  The picture was taken during our performance in the student center.  I wondered whatever became of him after graduation and sorry to hear he passed so young.  I'm sure he made a great husband and father.

RE #30333 Gary, I SO hope there will be 'second book' with future installments! You have me hanging on every word and I truly feel I missed out by being in the Air Force during those years '67 & '68 when so much was happening at AC, especially in the music arena. I showed up on campus in August of '69 and that evening the Sound of Music was being performed.....totally unexpected by me and I thought I had been transported to a magical wonderland! I hope you will cover that experience in detail. Meanwhile, I, like others I am sure, will patiently wait, drumming our fingers on the table until the next installment!

I've really been enjoying your trip down memory lane with such outstanding recall of your years at AC. The chorale/band segments are especially delightful. I found this old pic of a chorale fun show from '71 but I can't tell if the venue was Squaw Valley, student center, or what. The four dancers L to R are Fred Crow, Brent Fieldler, Richard Schumann and not sure of the guy on the end...I suppose I could look him up in the Envoy. Reading your stories is a real highlight of my daily AC forum perusing!

Marni Nixon dubbed Natalie. Rita was dubbed in one of her songs by Betty Wand. Love watching them both in WSStory. Take care, Richard
