Susan Endres (Whitlark) - Year Entered 1967

Susan Endres (Whitlark)

Information below from the United Church of God.

Sue Whitlark, wife of elder Fred Whitlark of the Lexington, Kentucky congregation, died on Sunday, July 7. Surrounded by members of her family, she peacefully finished her race after battling breast cancer for 22 years. She now awaits the first resurrection. We all look forward to the time when we will see her again in an incorruptible body as God will wipe away every tear.

Sue started attending the Church of God with her parents when she was a teenager, and attended Ambassador College in Pasadena, California. After graduation in 1971, she worked as the student housing director for the college, and then served as an Assistant Dean of Students.

Other than God Himself, Sue’s top priority was her grandkids. Her interests included landscaping, designing and creating cakes, sewing and cooking. Sue was very committed to God and His ways. She served the Church by singing in the choir, maintaining the membership directory and performing closed caption typing for the hard of hearing.

In addition, she played the role of an elder’s wife very well. Her husband, Fred Whitlark says, “Her efforts, her counsel, her encouragement enabled me to become a better elder, and to therefore more effectively serve the brethren.”

The Lexington congregation will hold a Celebration of Life after Sabbath services in the coming weeks. A specific date and further details are still to be determined.

The entire Whitlark family truly appreciates all of the cards received on Sue’s behalf, and they want to sincerely thank you all for your prayers for her and their family during this trial.

Daniel (Formerly Dennis) Cafourek (1966)

Again, I am deeply saddened by the recent demise of Susan (or Sue as I usually addressed her.)  At this time I do not know any specifics of her death...hope it was not something lengthy and painful.

My memory fails me...surely I had some individual dates with her...but the majority of the times are when their were others involved.  I will just mention two that stand out as exceptionally memorable.  The first was Tabernacles 1973, a number of us had taken a Western Airlines Triangle Flight from LAX to Hawaii and then on to Anchorage, AK, for the Festival.

A fellow had moved to Alaska, so when we arrived at the newly constructed Captain Cook Hotel for Tabernacles, he was able to take us to "the back country" and to a bar/restaurant quite far outside Anchorage.  Sue and her two travelmate lady friends were a part of that group.  The times we had still stand out to this day.  The fellow I traveled with was a photograper and he took many pictures...and prepared a slide show which we later shared with many.  Sue and the other two ladies were featured throughout the slide show.  She and the other two ladies certainly made the festival memorable.

We slept in Anchorage, and attended services in Anchorage, but otherwise, spent much time in "the back country."  Being just a simple country lad at the time, that was my "cup of tea."

Later, same photograper friend acted as though we had formed an "escort service" and would escort young ladies to differing rendevous.  Now  that was not the type of "escort service" some are familiar with.  Please remember, we were immersed, in covenant with the Most High, and led by His Spirit...as were the ladies we escorted.

Then we received a call from Sue and her roommate asking us to escort them to Santa Catalina Island. Remember the recording by the Four Preps from the 1940's?   "Twenty-six miles across the sea, Stanta Catalina is waiting for me...The Island Of Romance."

Now, who in their right mind would turn down the opportunity to escort two lovely young ladies...to the Island of Romance?"  In other words, obviously we accepted the opportunity.

So the four of us traveled to the departure point.  To my surprise, we were to be flown over to the island on an old pontoon plane that was small, and shook and rocked and rolled just sitting there.  About 10 to 14 people were directed to load through the back door and find our seats.  I asked myself, "Is this really safe?"

Once we were loaded in, the attendant came to the back door...stuck his head inside and proclaimed, "May God Go With You!!" and slammed the door and the plane reverbrated.  Was he tried to tell us we needed all the help we could get?

We thoroughly enjoyed the excursion.  We were giving and receiving joy...and creating memories.

I will mention just one other memory from the stay on "The Island Of Romance."  As we traversed the island, we noticed a sign on one of the roads.  The sign read:  "Dangerous Curves."  Wouldn't you know it, my photograper friend and I asked the ladies to "model" in front of the sign to depict just how dangerous those curves could be.  I viewed that pic for years and couldn't help but smile.

There were many other precious memories that could be shared...there was the Fox and Hounds occurrance, but perhaps some of that experience...though remembered and does bring a smile...perhaps that is best not included here.

I last saw Sue at the conference in Cincinnati is May 1998 (I believe that's when it was).  We talked and reminiced on some of these events...even laughed.

All this is to express that, though I have not seen her since then...and saw her only that once, and just briefly, in so many years, still she is well remembered and will be missed.

As I usually end these messages of hope and encouragement, "She now sleeps with all the hopes of the Resurrection."

Sue Endres was the sister I never had. We were close friends at AC and became roommates a few years after graduation. We were both strong willed ladies, creating wonderful memories along with a "tiff" here and there😉
We truly were "family", and I will miss her dearly. Susan never complained about her long journey with cancer. I can still hear that strong throaty laugh she had...She was the best🙌 Darling Sue, rest in peace until we meet up and spend eternity laughing and sharing tales with one another. You set us all an example of "fighting the good fight"❤️

Steve Frandsen (1975)

I remember Sue Endres a little bit from when I arrived in Pasadena in August 1975 and she assisted me with my dorm assignment. I didn't know Del Mar from Booth City in Big Sandy. She was very helpful and got me squared away in Grove Terrace. I'm sad to hear she is now gone. I'm sure I've met Fred at some point along the way but it's been 49 years so the exact occasion escapes me.

My condolences to Fred, their children and Grandkids and extended family and friends.

Steve Frandsen
