John was one of my roommates for at least part of the year our freshman year.  However most of my memories are from our association working in Mail Processing.  John was in the states in 2013 and was to be passing through Kentucky.  He inquired about arranging to visit us on his way across the state.  We live about 100 miles from I-75 he would be driving on but, our good friends, and a former co-worker, Gary and Karla Sefcak were only about 20 miles from his route.  We arranged for all of us to congregate at their home for a few hours and a good lunch.  As it turned out that was to be the last time we were to visit with him in this life.

Robert Gentet (1957)

John originally came from a small Texas town just south of San Antonio where I live.  On a couple of occasions when he came back to see his relatives, we got together for a meal, and one time he stayed overnight with us before catching his plane the next day.  We enjoyed seeing each other and would also write e-mails to each other.  I felt sorry for Jan at John's passing.  While I never saw Jan after they went to England, I have fond memories of her while we were students.

His obituary in The Journal read as follows:

John Ross Schroeder, senior writer for The Good News and pastor of two United Church of God congregations in the British Isles, died in a hospital on March 8, 2014. John is survived by his wife, Jan, manager of the UCG British Isles office, a son, Walter, and a daughter Stephanie. Cards and messages for Jan and the family may be sent to the British Isles office by E-mail to info@ucg.org.uk or by mail to United Church of God, P.O.Box 705, Watford WD19 6FZ, United Kingdom.

Bill Eastburn--I knew John very well at college, and traveled with him at least once on the train between California and Texas.  He visited at my home in Austin one time between college years.  He was a very dedicated man and good friend--and fellow Texan!
