James A. Wells - March 2, 1937 – August 21, 2026
James Alexander Wells, born March 2, 1937, in London, England, died peacefully at home in Blue Springs, Missouri, on August 21, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., at age 89. His beloved wife of 65 years, Phyllis Yvonne (DeBerry), was at his side.
James devoted 65 years of his life to ministry and service to Jesus Christ and His Church. Originally studying to become an organic chemist specializing in cancer treatment, his life changed in 1957 after attending a series of evangelistic Worldwide Church of God Bible lectures. He subsequently traveled that year to Pasadena, California, to attend Ambassador College and study theology, leading to graduation in June of 1961.
James and Phyllis married June 11, 1961, and he was ordained to the ministry June 28, 1962. They served congregations in Belfast, Northern Ireland; Saskatoon and North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada; and then the Topeka, Kansas and St. Joseph congregations, before moving to Independence, Missouri, where James served as an Elder in the Kansas City Living Church of God congregation the rest of his life.
James and Phyllis were blessed with three children: Michael, John (Paula), and Rhonda; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and their families.
He will be remembered for his faithful service, devotion to his family, and steadfast commitment to his faith.
The funeral will be held Sunday August 30, 2026 with visitation from 1-3pm and the service from 3-4pm at Langsford Funeral Home, located at 115 SW 3rd St, Lee's Summit, Missouri, USA. A graveside service will be held the following morning at 10am at the nearby Lee's Summit Historical Cemetery.
