Loving husband and father Donald R. Brooks, 68, of Longview entered the arms of his Lord Aug. 27, 2016, at home.

He was born Feb. 1, 1948, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Raymond E. and E. Faye (Westmorland) Brooks. He had his first paper route at the age of 8 and continued delivering papers until his first full-time job at 16.

Don graduated from Riverside Polytechnic High School in Riverside, Calif., and from Ambassador College with a degree in liberal arts, majoring in history and minoring in literature. He earned his accounting, business and finance certificate from Riverside University, a total quality management (TQM) certificate from Stanislaus State University and a certificate in activity-based (ABC) costing from the University of California, in Berkley.

Don was the assistant controller for California Canners and Growers in San Francisco, turkey accounting manager for Foster Farms in Turlock, Calif., production accounting manager for Zacky Farms in Fresno, Calif., plant controller for Diamond Walnut Growers in Stockton, Calif., northwest division accounting manager for Foster Farms in Kelso and chief financial officer for Wilson Oil Inc., doing business as Wilcox and Flegel Oil Co.

He helped to plant several churches in California using his business expertise, as well as several non-government organizations and parochial schools to set up financial systems. Don was a caring and generous soul. He volunteered to serve on the boards of Hard Hats for Christ, Christian Fellowship, Three Rivers Christian School, Three Rivers Christian School Foundation and Migrant Ministry.

He married his high school sweetheart, Elinor Virag in 1967 and had three children. They later divorced. In 1979, Don married Laurene Dunlop. They added two children to the family. Laurene passed away in 2013. He married Lynda (Blankenship) Van Buren in 2015 and loved her three children as his own. Don described her in his life history as “a blessing from God at this stage of my life.”

Don is survived by his wife, Lynda; a brother, Tony Brooks; eight children, Aaron Brooks, Shannon Brooks Lehnert, Sean Brooks, Caitlin Gillum, Thomas Brooks, Andy Van Buren, Mendy Castle and A.J. Van Buren; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Don’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday at “The Heights,” 3136 Columbia Heights Road with Pastor Lance Caddel officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care Center, Hard Hats for Christ, Christian Fellowship, or the Three Rivers Christian School Foundation.
