Born in the Haywood Community, he was the son of Elvert Earl and Ruth Irene (Plunkett) Chandler. He graduated from McAlester High School in 1954, and later attended Ambassador College in Pasadena, Calif., where he later taught Spanish for a period of time. He later joined the Navy and served seven years, after which he worked for the civil service, traveling all over the world to different military installations, until his retirement. He enjoyed painting, reading, the outdoors, folk music and gardening. A resident of Haywood, he died at the age of 66 at Saxon, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his father, Elvert Chandler.
